denotation, connotation and implication in semantics

Edit Posted by with No comments
Hy guys.. Assalamualaykum ^^, we meet again in my blog.. Okey, this blog is the assignment for my study "semantics". This blog will explain about what is denotation, connotation and implication in semantics.. So please read it! And if it is so good you could share it.. Thank you.!

Denotation
What is denotation? Denotation is dictionary meaning of the word. Another way to think of it is as the associations that a word usually elicits for most speakers of a language, as distinguished from those elicited for any individual speaker because of personal experience.
Connotation
What is connotation? Connotation is the associated or secondary meaning. It can be something suggested or implied by a word or thing, rather than being explicitly named or described. It is important in poetry because use them to further develop or complicate a poem’s meaning.
--> Example of denotation and connotation :
1. The word "snake" simple denotes a reptile. But it has the connotation of someone who can not be trusted, someone who cheats, and/or someone who will do harm to you if they can.
2. The word “home” is just a name of structure or a shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household, but the word has connotation of a nation, a place of warmth, comfort, and affection.

CONNOTATION
Connotation comes from the Latin word “connotare,” which means, “to mark in addition. In some cases, connotation can also be similar to
symbolism as it hinges on culturally-accepted meanings.connotation is an idea that is suggested by or associated with a word. Connotation is the associated or secondary meaning. It can be something suggested or implied by a word or thing, rather than being explicitly named or described. It is important in poetry because use them to further develop or complicate a poem’s meaning..
Example of denotation and connotation :
         The word "snake" simple denotes a reptile. But it has the connotation of someone who can not be trusted, someone who cheats, and/or someone who will do harm to you if they can.
         The word “home” is just a name of structure or a shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household, but the word has connotation of a nation, a place of warmth, comfort, and affection.
         , the connotation of a red rose is love and passion, and if an author were to refer to a red rose while talking about a relationship, the reader would understand that this connotation and symbolism was at play.
          The denotation is that it is a red, wild flower. If we look at the connotations, we naturally associate a rose with Valentine's Day or romance
and courting.

Implication
What is implication? This is meaning which a speaker or writer intends but does not communicate directly. Where a listener is able to deduce or infer the intended meaning from what has been uttered, this is known as (conversational) implicature.
For example : A: We are late! à It is mean that they must quickly.

What is the difference between Denotation and Connotation?

Denotation

- It refers to the primary, literal meaning or the dictionary meaning of a word.
- Denotation is not thus classified.
- It remains the same regardless of culture and personal experiences.

Connotation

- It refers to the personal and cultural meaning in addition to their primary, literal meaning of a word.
- It can be classified as positive connotation and negative connotation.
- it can change according to culture and personal experiences.

semantics " Euphemism"

Hy guys..^^ now I will give you the summary for semantics about " Euphemism"
Okey, this is the summary..

Euphemism Definition,What is Euphemism ??Euphemism is an idiomatic expression which loses its literal meanings and refers to something else in order to hide its unpleasantness. For example, “kick the bucket” is a euphemism that describes the death of a person.Euphemism depends largely on the social context of the speakers and writers where they feel the need to replace certain words which may prove embarrassing for particular listeners or readers in a particular situation."Techniques for Creating Euphemism"         Euphemism masks a rude or impolite expression but conveys the concept clearly and politely. Several techniques are employed to create euphemism. It may be in the form of abbreviations e.g. B.O. (body odor), W.C. (toilet) etc.Foreign words may be used to replace an impolite expression e.g. faux (fake), or faux pas (foolish error) etc.Sometimes, they are abstractions e.g. before I go (before I die).       Euphemism is frequently used in everyday life. Let us look at some common euphemism examples:You are becoming a little thin on top (bald). Our teacher is in the family way (pregnant). He is always tired and emotional (drunk). We do not hire mentally challenged (stupid) people. He is a special child (disabled or retarded)."Examples of Euphemism in Literature"Example #1Examples of euphemism referring to sex are found in William Shakespeare ’s “ Othello” and “ Antony and Cleopatra ”. In “ Othello”, Act 1 Scene 1, Iago tells Brabantio:“I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs.”Example #2John Donne in his poem “ The Flea ” employs euphemism. He says:“Mark but this flea, and mark in this,How little that which thou denies me is;It suck’d me first, and now sucks thee,And in this flea our two bloods mingled be.Thou know’st that this canneuphemismA sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead;Yet this enjoys before it woo,And pamper’d swells with one blood made of two;And this, alas! is more than we would do.”In order to persuade his beloved to sleep with him, the speaker in the poem tells her how a flea bit both of them and their blood got mixed in it. This is a euphemism

Hi.. Perkenalkan sebelum nya nama saya siska ..

SYMBOL & REFERENT

1.      SYMBOL
The symbol is a linguistic element in the form of words, sentencesand so on;which refers to objects, situationsevents, and so onIn the sentence "This is great".Only the word "This" is a symbol if the word "this" refers to an objectsituationevent, for example a booka shirtand so on. The word "good" has no symbolic functionbecause the word "good" only serve phraseattitude. For Richards and Ogden words thatexpress feelings, attitudeshopes, dreams, and so on are not included within the meaning of the symbolThese words (whichexpress the feelingsattitudeshopes, dreamsand so on) are grouped into the "emotive language.
Symbolic language defined byRichards and Ogden is the language that matches the language of fact or facts.Meanwhileemotive language has usefulness in the communication process togenerate the expected attitudes of others orto encourage others to act, and so on
The symbol (symbol) is a sign that the relationship between the sign and the denotatum determined by a generally accepted rule

The symbol (symbol) is a sign that the relationship between the sign and the denotatum determined by a rule that is generally applicable. Signs can be classified by causes, as disclosed Djajasudarma (1993) as follows.

1.marks caused by nature, known to man for the experience, for example: -
Overcast day will mark the rain, -
Persistent rain could cause flooding, -
Flooding can cause epidemics and famine, and so on.
2.marks caused by animals, known to humans from animal sounds, such as: -
No sign of the dogs barking in the driveway, -
Cat fight (meow) with a lively voice no signs of disease outbreaks or commotion, and so on.

3.marks caused by human beings, this sign is distinguished by:
(1) the verbal is a sign of human-generated through the tools of speech (organ of speach) And
(2) signs that are nonverbal, used by humans to communicate, as well as verbal signs. Nonverbal sign can be distinguished by:
a.The resulting mark limbs (body gesture) Is known as sign language, for example:

Thumbs up means great, good, and so on. -
Meaningful nod yes, saluting, and so on. -
Shook his head meaningfully and not, and so on. -
Glaring meaningful surprised, angry, and so on. -
Pointing the finger means not understand, agree, and so on. -
Pointing meaningful, one person, and so on.
b.sign produced by sound (voice), for example: -
Meaningful whistling happily, calling, wanting to know, and so on. -
Screaming meaningful pain, ask for help, there is a danger, and so forth. -
Cleared (coughed) means no one wants to know, and so on.

2.      REFERENT
Reference is the object or something that is beyond language. If we use the symbol we refer to the referent. As quoted by Parera (1990: 43) Richards and Ogden stated it is important to find a referent in order to know whether a reference is correct or not. And if reference is true, then it refers to the fact (if a reference "hangs together" in the way the actual referent hangs together, the reference is true and Refers to a fact).
Reference is a concept or idea. In the picture above, between symbol and referent is not directly related to the marked line-breaking berputus (between language and foreign languages). Conjunction through thought or reference.

Referential relationship is a relationship that exists between a word and the outside world language that referencedthe conversation. The relationship betweenwords (symbol), meaning (the concept or
reference) and something that is referencedor referent is an indirect relationshipThe relationship between these three elements, can be illustrated by the so-called triangle ofsemiotics (semiotic triangle) of Ogden andRichards (1972); Palmer (1976as follows.

Hasil gambar untuk contoh referent semantik

In the picture there are symbols that focuses on the word as a symbolic language. So when a written or spoken words will have meaning to refer to something beyond language. For example, we read the word 'seat' in the text. Now, we will connect it to an object that is based on our experience, never seen or used. Physical context is then called the referent. But in its development, the concept of Ogden and Richard is more suited to a noun 'concrete' and not the emotive word. Emotive words are more difficult to be understood more clearly because it was confused with the emotional, diplomatic and other disorders. For example the word industrious, good, freedom, loyalty. The term reference symbol has a meaning to language and references. For example, we could call the 'Ir. Sukarno 'or' the President of the first 'to refer to the same referent. With this example just given us a better understanding of what is meant by the reference and referent.

BERANI BERHIJRAH UNTUK MENJADI LEBIH BAIK

Edit Posted by with No comments
blog ini saya tulis untuk assignment semantics IV B from mr. Budianto Hamudin
